Computer Infrastructure
Immediately after I finished my first project building a website for McMaster-Carr I asked to be moved to an infrastructure team. Infrastructure was where I had gotten stuck and I wanted to understand how to create and debug it. Infrastructure at McMaster was about provisioning project specific virtual machines on VMware. It was there that I picked up the wrongheaded idea that there was dignity in making infrastructure from scratch. I've swung the other way now and use cloud providers to free up time that would have spent on infrastructure working on the product instead.
